Throughout the 2016-17 academic year, Hollins will be presenting an array of distinguished speakers, musical and theatrical performances, and other activities to commemorate our 175th anniversary.

 

Olympia Snowe

Former Senator Olympia Snowe

Snowe was elected a U.S. senator from her home state of Maine in 1994 and was the second woman, after Margaret Chase Smith, to represent Maine in the Senate. A Republican, Snowe served in the Senate until her third term ended in January 2013. She is the fourth woman ever to be elected to both houses of Congress and the first woman in American history to serve in both houses of a state legislature and in both houses of Congress. Snowe is currently a senior fellow at the Bipartisan Policy Center and cochairs its Commission on Political Reform. Book signing to follow.

Berrien Moore

Earth Scientist Berrien Moore

Internationally recognized, Moore is vice president for weather and climate programs at the University of Oklahoma and director of the National Weather Center. He is a recipient of the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, and agency’s highest civilian honor.

Donna Brazile

Democratic National Committee Interim Chair Donna Brazile

Brazile has worked on campaigns for many Democratic presidential candidates, including Jesse Jackson, Walter Mondale, Richard Gephardt, and Michael Dukakis. She was Al Gore’s campaign manager during the 2000 election. A well-known author, she has been a commentator for CNN and a consultant for ABC news.

Maria Kitsopoulos, cello, performs with members of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Stewart Wiley, to honor the trustees of Hollins University – past, present, and future  – and Hollins’ 175th anniversary. Works to be performed include Suite for Solo Cello No. 5 in C minor and Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major by Bach, Cello Concerto in Bb Major by Boccherini, and Vocalise by Rachmaninoff. Kitsopoulos holds The Secular Society Chair in cello at the New York Philharmonic, also celebrating their 175th anniversary. Sponsored by The Secular Society. Concert

Hollins University Choirs and Roanoke College Oriana Singers

The Oriana Singers of Roanoke College will join with the Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Talmadge Singers of Hollins to present a collaborative concert in celebration the 175th Anniversaries of both collegiate institutions. Conducted by Jeffery Sandborg and Shelbie Wahl-Fouts.
