Internships at Hollins

Internships allow Hollins students to explore and to discover, to ask pertinent questions, and to solve interesting problems. In addition, internships provide students with specific skills, introduce them to the rigors of the workplace, give them insights into a field, and allow them to measure their own abilities against the demands of a given profession.

What Is an Internship?

  • Supervised work experience with intentional learning outcomes and goals.
  • An environment where students can ask questions about the work, field, or career paths.
  • Educationally enriching projects with outlined responsibilities, mentoring, quality training, supervision and evaluation.
  • Most assignments should involve autonomous projects and progressively increased levels of responsibility so students can show initiative and creative problem-solving.
  • Clerical work should be kept to a minimum.

Types of Internships

Hollins Program Internships

Want to test-drive a career and build your resume? Through Career and Life Design, you can plug into exclusive internships backed by Hollins’ powerful alumni network. The Signature Program offers an immersive, full-time experience during January Short Term, allowing you to work remotely or in a new city. Alternatively, the Roanoke Valley Program provides flexible, local internship options during any term.

Independent Internships

Independent internships are ones students seek on their own. These internships can be arranged for academic credit and take place during the summer, fall, spring, and January short term. Students can find and apply for formally offered opportunities or network to create their own experience.

Micro-internships are the center between professional, short-term and paid internships - Parker Dewey

Micro-Internships with Parker Dewey

Micro-Internships, through our partnership with Parker Dewey, offer short-term, paid work experiences alongside corporate and nonprofit partners. Students can showcase their skills, explore career paths, and develop professional networks. These opportunities typically range from 10 to 40 hours of remote work, unlike traditional internships.

International Internships

Hollins University’s Global Learning Hub coordinates international internships in various countries, including Spain, Argentina, Japan, France, England, Greece, and Italy, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in their fields of interest.

When Can I complete an Internship for credit?

Students are able to participate in internships for credit throughout the year. See below for specific guidelines on internships during fall, spring, and summer versus the January short term.

Semester & Summer

Students can participate in fall and spring internships in the Roanoke Valley or through remote work. Summer enables students to intern anywhere they wish whether it be in person or remote. Credit options available for these terms include 2 (70 hours completed) and 4 credits (140 hours completed).

January Short Term

A January short term internship must be a fulltime internship for 4 academic credits, a minimum of 35 hours per week for four weeks. Students can pursue independent internships or participate in formal programs like Signature and First-Year internships.

First-Year Internship

All first-years are to remain in residence through the first January short term and participate in the course, Conflict and Collaboration. After January, first-year students are able to register internships as early as the spring semester of their first year.
